Got a backflow testing notice? Start with the assembly, deadline, and recipient

A backflow testing notice is a prompt to verify an identified assembly with the program that issued the notice—not proof that every plumbing fixture on the property needs the same work. Preserve the notice, match it to the actual assembly, and confirm the recipient's current instructions before scheduling.

The short answer: use the notice as a matching document

Start by finding the assembly information printed on the notice: service address, meter or account reference, assembly location, and any serial or program number. Compare those details with the physical assembly before anyone tests it. A report attached to the wrong serial number or service can be difficult for a receiving program to reconcile.

The notice should also tell you who receives the result and when. Portland's Water Bureau is one example: it sends annual reminders and asks commercial customers to follow the schedule in the letter. Your utility may use a different interval, portal, form, or tester-registration rule.

Four checks before booking a test

  1. Confirm the exact assembly

    Read the tag and location at the site. A property can have separate domestic, irrigation, fire, boiler, or process assemblies.

  2. Ask the recipient what it accepts

    Confirm the deadline, required form or portal, whether it requires a registered tester, and who is responsible for sending the completed report.

  3. Coordinate safe access

    Give the tester access to the assembly and identify services affected by isolation before the appointment—not after a gauge is connected.

  4. Keep the final record

    Retain the notice, completed report, and any repair or retest documentation together under the assembly identity.
