Backflow prevention assemblies: what they are, and why testability matters
A backflow prevention assembly is a field-testable mechanical safeguard between potable water and a potential contamination source. It is not a generic name for every backflow product: the shutoffs and test cocks are what let a qualified tester verify an assembly in place.
Assembly, device, and air gap are not interchangeable terms
EPA guidance distinguishes a backflow prevention assembly from a backflow prevention device by field testability. An assembly includes test cocks and inlet and outlet shutoff valves so it can be tested while installed. A device may prevent reverse flow but is not field-testable in that same in-line way.
An air gap is a different protection method: a physical separation between a water outlet and a receiving vessel. The right protection method is a hazard, plumbing, and authority decision—not something a report generator or a general guide can select for a specific property.

The problem is a pressure reversal through a cross-connection
A cross-connection is an actual or potential connection between potable water and a nonpotable source. Backflow is unwanted reverse flow through that connection. EPA describes two common pressure conditions: backpressure, where pressure downstream becomes higher than the potable supply, and backsiphonage, where pressure in the potable system drops and can draw material toward it.
That hydraulic context matters because assemblies do not all protect against the same conditions. A label or a nearby irrigation line is not enough to choose an assembly; the authority having jurisdiction and the water system's hazard classification control the final answer.

The common testable assembly families
The family name tells a certified tester which approved field procedure and report fields apply. It does not by itself prove that the installation is approved for its service or hazard.

Approval, installation, and the test record answer different questions
An approved model, an accepted installation, and a passing field test are related but separate facts. USC's approval program evaluates assemblies in laboratory and field conditions. A local authority decides which products and installations it accepts. A field test records the result of the assembly that is actually in service at a particular date and location.
A useful record preserves the assembly identity, the measured readings, the person and gauge used, and any repair and retest history. A pass box without that context is difficult for an owner, tester, or program reviewer to reconcile later.

Identify it
Record the type, make, model, serial number, size, service, and accessible location from the tag and site—not a guess from a photo.
Find the receiving authority
Ask the water system or local cross-connection program which approved assembly list, tester credential, form, and filing path applies.
Use the accepted procedure
A qualified tester should work from the currently accepted procedure and current manufacturer's instructions, not an abbreviated web checklist.
Keep a reconcilable result
Retain the report and any repair/retest information with the same assembly identity so the next annual cycle can be matched correctly.
